We have just discovered that our index.html file was maliciously modified on Sunday (9/2) at 1:14 p.m. While the page appeared to be perfectly normal, code for a script which referred to ‘adult’ material was inserted and may have prompted a trojan warning for those of you who visited our Welcome page with the Internet Explorer web browser. (You’re much better off with Firefox, by the way.)
This problem has been corrected. The file was fixed about 23 hours after the page was modified, and we will be monitoring our files on the server every day for a while to ensure that the page is not modified again. Our hosting provider and a university that was unknowingly hosting some adult pages have been notified of the situation.
Please note that this was not an attack directed at our site (it most likely affected hundreds of web sites), and it seems that things like this have happened to several hosting providers in the past. Thank you to the visitor who brought this issue to our attention.
